Steve Jobs

Almost everything--all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure--these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart. -Steve Jobs, Stanford 2005

Steve Jobs died Wednesday at age 56. I’m neither a reporter, biographer, or technology expert so for me to comment seems a bit specious. Furthermore, I’ve never used an Apple product, not out of any principle or dislike, I’m simply not a technology/new gadget person.

Why post then? To catch a SEO keyword uptick? No, I’m not that clever or crass. Simply put, I am deeply touched by these words. Impending death does not always awaken eloquence or awareness but Jobs seems profoundly aware of what he was losing and yet, also grateful for what he had gained in his life. Whether I know his products or his business is ultimately of no matter. What I know is that this was a man who had complete faith in his vision and, just as importantly, himself. To me that is awe inspiring because it is so foreign to most of us.

It’s a noisy world and getting noisier every day. We all need to find the quiet inside and live by it.

Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma—which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary. -Steve Jobs, Stanford 2005

  1. "It’s a noisy world and getting noisier every day. We all need to find the quiet inside and live by it".

    Eloquent and beautifully put.

I too was saddened by Steve's death, not because I was a great fan or follower of his work, (in fact, I hate my iPhone and most Apple products), but I was touched by the things he said, the things he stood for and believed in. I guess, overall, Steve believed in himself, even when others told him his business plans were insane.

One of my favourite quotes is 'there is no advance without adversity' (I can't remember where I read it). Everytime I struggle or waiver, I always say it out loud to myself and it pushes me on :-)

Great blog by the way, your writing is simply stunning.

  2. Agreed. The only Apple product I've ever purchased has been fruit, but I have lost countless friends and family members to cancer and don't know one person who hasn't been affected in some way.

Steve Jobs was truly an innovator, and his death also goes to show that no amount of money, intellect or spirit can render you immune to this damn disease. It's sad, but also a reminder that each day is a gift!

  3. I'm so glad you posted his words. They are truly words to try to live by. I've always admired him as an innovator and thinker, but hadn't thought much about him as just a man.

I'm going to savor his words and try to apply them to my life in whatever small ways I can.

  5. Catherine,

Like you, I was moved to copy that quote from Steve Jobs as a reminder to not be so chickenshit about carving my own path.

Hello, just catching up to your posts. Thank you for stopping by with kind words of concern.

  6. Thanks for all the comments, everyone! As I read them I am also struck by how someone who was so wildly well known, really wasn't. He was seen in one light but had a depth beyond that.

  7. Steve Jobs had a wisdom and a vision that went beyond the narrow scope of his business. He was not just an innovator in technology. He was a revolutionary.
