Call it a new alignment of the stars, a chakra adjustment, re-balanced chi, or just a serious change of attitude but here is where I am right now. And I’m going to do my best to stay for a while.
(I may be in a new space but the beginning of this video is a bit much. You can fast forward to 2:40 when the song begins)
My mama told me when I was young
We are all born superstars
She rolled my hair and put my lipstick on
In the glass of her boudoir
"There's nothin wrong with lovin who you are"
She said, "'cause he made you perfect, babe"
"So hold your head up girl and you'll go far,
Listen to me when I say"
I'm beautiful in my way
'Cause God makes no mistakes
I'm on the right track baby
I was born this way
Don't hide yourself in regret
Just love yourself and you're set
We are all born superstars
She rolled my hair and put my lipstick on
In the glass of her boudoir
"There's nothin wrong with lovin who you are"
She said, "'cause he made you perfect, babe"
"So hold your head up girl and you'll go far,
Listen to me when I say"
I'm beautiful in my way
'Cause God makes no mistakes
I'm on the right track baby
I was born this way
Don't hide yourself in regret
Just love yourself and you're set
And since I’m already hanging from this slender limb…this guy is H-O-T. Yes, I said it and yes, I mean it. Really.
What flies your freak flag, gives you power, makes your heart dance? Not a ‘happy’ thing- but a joyous anger, a ‘here I am this is it’ thing.
First of all, this song always gets me in a "Eff-it, I'm awesome" mood, even though Lady Gaga is totally Madonna.
ReplyDeleteSecond, I fly my freak flag on a daily basis, but can't think of one damn example right now. I guess it's just the fact that I know I'm not the prettiest, the smartest, most popular or exciting, etc. (damn, where was I going with this?) but I still think I'm better than 99% of people out there. It's not being cocky, but rather confident that I'm working on being the best me I can be, an authenticity I think is lacking in a lot of things.
I will dance despite being a skinny white Polish girl, I will sing, I will take delight in talking with strangers while wearing yoga pants and no makeup, etc. I'm me--take it, leave it or get the heck out of my way ;)
Think I should fly a freak flag as well.... in fact I do believe that's how my husband views my blog. Glad you shared today, I found you on LBS.
ReplyDeleteEverytime I see Gaga's lyrics in print, it reminds me just how empowering they are for ALL of us.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with your journey!

My freak flag is not shaving my underarms when it's too cold to wear sleeveless tops.
ReplyDeleteI hate that women have been duped into believing shaving is a necessary grooming ritual. According to The Straight Dope, women were browbeaten into shaving their underarms beginning in 1915 with an ad in Harper's Bazaar. Really, it's just hair. I'm always amazed when a celebrity gets lambasted for not shaving (Drew Barrymore, Julia Roberts), so that's my f--- y-- to the world. It's my way of being subversive.

So happy there are empowered women out there! It's not easy but we are all strong and beautiful- and don't you forget it!
